BULSTAT NUMBER

Everyone who purchases a property in Bulgaria must have a Bulstat registration number. This currently costs approx. 60 euros and must be applied for within seven days of registering the title deeds. Failure to register will incur a fine of up to 700 Bulgarian leva. It is basically for the Bulgarian tax authorities, so they can keep track of income and capital gains tax owed to them by foreigners.

Following our first completion, we received our Bulstat card along with the title deeds. (Power of attorney in favour of a Bulgarian solicitor or agent's representative is mandatory in applying for Bulstat).

We notified the solicitor acting for us at the second completion of our existing Bulstat numbers, as if you buy a second property, the Bulstat register must be updated. We have recently discovered however that the Bulgarian system cannot cope with more than one property per Bulstat, so we are unsure as to what exactly will happen.
