HOW TO LOCATE ESTATE AGENTS

We began by reading the current and back issues of overseas property magazines such as Homes Overseas and a Place in the Sun, both excellent sources of information and a very good starting point, and any other overseas property magazines which had adverts and articles on Bulgaria. From these, we put together a list of the estate agents dealing with Bulgarian property, and began using the internet, an essential tool, to narrow the list down to a handful of overseas property agents whom we felt confident were professional, offered a good product and very importantly for us were UK-based.
The Bulgarian embassy website is a useful source of information and provides a list of both Bulgarian and British agents.
In addition the MyBulgaria website forum is useful for general information and obtaining other buyer's views on agents through which they are in the process of purchasing Bulgarian property. Some of the comments can be quite candid!

We also attended a number of overseas property shows at GMEX in Manchester e.g. A Place in the Sun and Homes Overseas. This and similar venues throughout the UK are a good place to meet your selected agents in order to give yourself some degree of confidence and enable you to confirm that your choice of agent is the correct one for you.

After considerable research, we decided to buy through British overseas property agents as not only did we prefer the look of their websites in general, it is also much easier to deal with UK-based companies both during the buying and the after-sales process.

One thing to bear in mind is that unlike buying UK property where your association with the vendor's estate agent will be short-lived, when buying property in Bulgaria you will be communicating with your chosen agent for approximately two years and possibly beyond if you want to sell your property through that same agent at a future date. So it is imperative that you choose an agent that you feel comfortable with and have confidence in.
